I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of
your letters dated the 7th. and 21st. instant, the contents of
which has been communicated to His Majesty's Minister at Peking
and His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General at Canton.
2.
The question raised in the last paragraph
of your letter of the 17th. instant is at present engaging the
attention of the Government, and I shall be glad to obtain the
views of the China Association as to the manner in which trade-
-marks registered in this Colony, but not registered in the
United Kingdom can be protected in China. It should be remember –
-ed in this connection that trade marks registered in this
Colony are not necessarily British, and that there is nothing
in the local Trade Marks Ordinance to prevent marks being
registered in Hongkong which conflict with marks already
registered in the United Kingdom but do not conflict with marks
already registered in the Colony,
I have etc.,
(sd.) F. H. May,
Colonial Secretary.
